Wondering how to get from here to there?
COLLEGE PREP, PLANNING, SELECTION AND APPLICATIONS
7th through 10th Grades: Mapping Your Journey
Formulating and implementing a long-term educational strategy for senior high school and beyond has maximum results when begun during the critical middle school and junior high school years.
As an experienced, knowledgeable teacher who has guided junior high students for over two decades, I can assist you in assessing whether—and what types of—testing or tutoring might best fit your teen when. Whether it be standardized or state testing, course selection or academic placement, interests, exploration or goals setting, I can help you map the way toward wherever your student would like to go.
While grades for middle school or junior high aren’t reported on college applications, students lay down the foundation for later academic success during these crucial years.
11th and 12th Grade: On Your Way
Ideally, we begin working together in April to May of sophomore year or in August to September of junior year.
JUNIOR YEAR
We’ll meet during your student’s junior year to discuss:
Classes
Academic strengths and challenges
Extra-curriculars in and outside of school
Types of colleges and program options that might best fit your student’s needs, goals, and interests
We’ll prepare for:
Standardized testing, and A.P. & I.B. tests
College campus visits and interviews
Summer plans
Options for senior year, such as College In School, PSEO, or Semester Abroad
After thorough discussions of financial, academic, personal, and other relevant parameters, we’ll compile a preliminary College List.
SENIOR YEAR
Starting in August of senior year, we’ll solidify the College List and create a detailed application timeline. Students begin senior year with a clear, step-by-step guide for what happens when. We’ll meet or Skype to work on:
Crafting the Personal Statement
Creating a Resume
Filling out applications and supplemental applications
Planning campus visits and preparing for interviews
Discussing financial options, scholarships and the FAFSA (the federal government financial aid program)
Tackling the 1001 decisions and details accompanying the application process
I will be right there, acting as your experienced guide through the maze of details that need to be completed.
